Glow Tonic

Glow Tonic (Blacklight Lemon-Tonic)
A 2-ingredient, party-perfect mocktail that **glows neon blue** under a blacklight. It’s crisp, citrusy, and takes 2 minutes to mix—then watch the magic happen.
Ingredients
- 3 cups tonic water (must contain quinine)
- 1 cup lemonade (or limeade)
- Ice cubes
- For the effect: a blacklight (UV-A, 365–395 nm)
Look for “quinine” on the tonic water label—club soda or seltzer won’t glow.
Directions
- Chill everything: Cold tonic water keeps the fizz strong and the glow crisp.
- Mix: Add 3 cups tonic and 1 cup lemonade to a pitcher or 4 glasses. Stir gently so you don’t lose the bubbles.
- Ice & serve: Add ice. For the show, turn off the lights and switch on your blacklight nearby—the drinks will glow bright blue!
- Party batch: Scale to taste using a 3:1 ratio of tonic to lemonade.
Want spooky fog? Place the filled glasses on a tray and add a few small dry-ice pellets to a separate bowl of water on the tray for rolling fog. Do not put dry ice directly in drinks unless you follow strict safety guidelines.
Why It Glows Under Blacklight 👻
Tonic water contains a natural compound called quinine. When ultraviolet (UV-A) light from a blacklight hits quinine, its electrons get excited and then relax—releasing energy as visible light. That process is called fluorescence, and quinine emits a vivid blue glow you can see in a dim room. The drink is perfectly safe under a standard party blacklight; you’re just seeing UV light transformed into visible light.
- Use real tonic: “Diet” tonic is fine if it still lists quinine.
- No glow? The lamp may be too weak or the room too bright. Use a 365–395 nm UV-A light and dim the lights.
- Other colors: Drinks with riboflavin (vitamin B2) fluoresce yellow-green—think a splash of a B-vitamin drink if you want multicolor effects.
Variations
- Witch’s Brew (Green): Use limeade, add a tiny splash of a riboflavin-fortified sports drink for greenish glow.
- Spooky Citrus: Add fresh lemon or lime wheels (they’ll glow at the edges!)
- Adults-only: For a cocktail, add 1–1½ oz gin or vodka per serving.
Make-Ahead & Storage
- Chill tonic and lemonade up to 24 hours ahead.
- Mix right before serving so the carbonation stays lively.
- Leftovers lose fizz—best enjoyed fresh.

Note: Quinine levels in tonic water are very low (that’s why it’s allowed in soft drinks). If you’re pregnant or have a quinine sensitivity, skip tonic and enjoy a non-glow citrus mocktail instead.
